In 2006 HwCg purchased their own winery, the Neqtar winery in Mildura, and so it was a logical decision to harvest and blend the wines for the new Australian range there, with the advantage of being able to oversee each step of production themselves.
HwCg’s Chief Winemaker Dominic Hentall was despatched to Mildura to work closely with the Australian winemakers on fruit selection and blending, and a range consisting of Viognier, Semillon Sauvignon, Shiraz, Shiraz Viognier, and Sangiovese Shiraz Rosé was finally decided upon – an unusual offering compared to the other Australian brands available in the market place.
Meanwhile in the UK, HwCg was working closely with design agency Be Like Water on building the brand. They named it Commissioner’s Block in honour of the Chairman of Railway Commissioners, who originally granted permission to plant vines next to his railway line, way back in 1913. Today, the Neqtar winery stands on the site where the Commissioner’s Block used to be. The unusual packaging depicts the block and railway line and tells the brand’s story. |
